What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium rods that replace tooth roots by fusing directly to the jawbone, providing outstanding support for dental restorations like dentures and crowns. With proper care, dental implants can provide you with the same comfort, dependability, and confidence you enjoyed with your natural teeth.

Our dentist surgically inserts dental implants through the gums and into the jawbone. After the gums and bone have healed, implants can support restorations like crowns or dentures.

Dr. Lande Explains Dental Implants Learn How This Treatment for Missing Teeth Works

Implant dentistry uses artificial replacements for your missing tooth roots. The artificial tooth roots fuse with the bone of the jaw for exceptional stability of your new teeth. Dr. Lande offers different implant-supported restorations at his dental practice in Carmel, IN, serving Indianapolis, Zionsville, and nearby areas.

The Benefits of Dental Implants Advantages Over Traditional Prostheses Like Removable Dentures

Unmatched Security

Dental implants provide a level of support for restorations that allow patients to speak, chew, and smile with total confidence.

Natural Function

Implant-supported restorations are just as usable as natural teeth. You will be able to chew gum or bite into a caramel apple without worrying that your dentures will shift out of place.

Improved Bone Health

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone loses necessary stimulation from the tooth roots, which can lead to bone atrophy. Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants curb bone loss by acting as prosthetic tooth roots. Preventing bone loss maintains the strength of your bite and retains your facial features.

Enhanced Confidence

Replacing a missing tooth or missing teeth will give you a full, beautiful smile once again, enhancing your self-esteem. Patients with attractive smiles feel better about smiling for pictures, speaking in public, and laughing out loud, leading to a better quality of life.

Tooth Loss Occurs Often And It's Completely Treatable

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, around 120 million Americans are living with at least one missing tooth. Of that number, 36 million of them have no teeth at all. If you've ever felt alone in this problem, you're not. And you're not alone in finding a solution either. Our dentist is here to help, starting with a dental implant consultation.

Why Implants Are Worth the Price

Implant dentistry is an investment that pays off for decades. Though the cost of dental implants sometimes makes patients hesitant about treatment, it may help you to know that dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental Implants Offer Long-Term Results

As long as you practice good oral hygiene and care for your implants properly, you will likely never need to replace them.

You Can Expect a Long-Lasting Foundation

Implants can also easily support new restorations as they need to be replaced over the years, so your crown, bridge, or denture will always have a reliable foundation.

Dental Implants Prevent Bone Atrophy in the Jaw

Finally, implants can prevent bone loss, especially when a missing tooth is addressed early. This means that you won't have to worry about costly bone graft or sinus lift procedures

Consultation and Preparation

You will meet with Dr. Lande for a consultation and dental exam to determine if you are a good candidate for implants. We will check to see if you need any preparatory procedures in order for implants to be successful and schedule them prior to your treatment. Once you qualify for dental implants, we will map out a custom treatment plan to restore your smile.

Implant Surgery

During the initial surgery at our office in Carmel, IN, Dr. Lande will make an incision in your gums and drill a small hole in the jawbone. Through the incision, he will insert the titanium post. Digital 3D X-rays will help Dr. Lande determine the best location and angle of implant placement, increasing your chances of implant success.

Osseointegration

The gums will be stitched closed over the implant so that it can fuse with the jawbone, a process known as osseointegration. Osseointegration typically takes between three and six months. Once this process is complete, the second surgery can proceed.

Abutments

You will return to our office for your second procedure. Once again, Dr. Lande will make a small incision in the gums, exposing the implant. He will then attach a special connector piece, known as an abutment, to the implant. The abutment will eventually connect the implant to your crown or denture. The gums are stitched closed around the abutment, leaving it exposed above the gumline.

Restoration Design

While your gums are healing around the abutments (which can take a few weeks), Dr. Lande will use impressions of your bite to design a restoration that will look and feel just like your natural teeth. We can produce dental crowns in our own office using our state-of-the-art CEREC® machine. The creation of larger restorations like dentures will be handled by a trusted dental lab.

Completing Your Smile

Once your gums have healed and your crown or denture is ready, you will return to our office one more time. Dr. Lande will attach your restorations to your abutments and make any necessary modifications. Now, your treatment will be complete, and you will walk out of our office with a full, bright smile.

Do you live in Indianapolis, Zionsville, or nearby? We'd love to meet with you.

All-on-4 dental implants

All-on-4 Dental Implants

With the All-on-4® method, patients missing a full dental arch can receive full implant-supported dentures with only four implants.

Using only four implants to support the denture reduces the costs and recovery time of treatment. Furthermore, because of the placement of the four implants, patients who have suffered bone recession can still qualify for All-on-4.

We can discuss the treatment timeline for All-on-4 as part of the consultation process.

Putting You at Ease at All Times Choose a Calm and Welcoming Environment

"Dr. Lande is perhaps the best dentist that I've ever had.  He is polite, considerate and has a natural ability to put anxious people at ease with his interpersonal skills..."

Dental Implant Aftercare

These tips can ensure your results last as long as possible.

Attend Regular Check-Ups

Visit our Carmel dentist's office every six months. During cleanings and exams, Dr. Lande can check the condition of your implants and restorations.

Brush Your Teeth

Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day. This removes food particles from your implant restoration and prevents bad breath as well.

Floss Your Teeth

Use superfloss or a water flossing system to remove hard-to-reach food particles around your implants and under the implant restoration(s).

Dental Implant FAQ

How long will my dental implants last?

With proper oral hygiene and aftercare, your dental implants can last a lifetime. Your implant restorations, on the other hand, are subject to natural wear and tear. Most crowns, bridges, and dentures last about 10-15 years before they need to be replaced.

I was told I needed a bone graft. What does that mean?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that increases bone density. You may need a bone graft if your jawbone has experienced atrophy related to tooth loss. Think of it as creating a better foundation in your jawbone for dental implants.

What should I do if my implant restoration breaks?

If your implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture is cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged, contact our Carmel dental office as soon as possible. We can discuss options for repair or replacement of the implant restoration.

Can dental implants fail?

Yes, though rest assured that the overall success rate of implants is high. That said, be sure to contact our practice if you notice that your implants are loose, painful, or feel different. You should also contact us if you experience signs of gum disease or gum recession. Soft tissue inflammation and the loss of healthy gum tissue could affect your dental implants.
